Training & Scholarship Opportunities
Animal Protection of New Mexico (APNM) encourages every animal shelter and animal control department to consistently allocate finances for staff training to help ensure the welfare of animals, increase staff safety and reduce liability while better serving the community. Following is information on cruelty training opportunities held both in New Mexico and around the country.
NATIONAL CRUELTY INVESTIGATIONS SCHOOL recently held in Rio Rancho, November 7-11, 2005
The second level of the National Cruelty Investigations School was held in Rio Rancho in early November, and Animal Protection of New Mexico (APNM) was awarded a grant to pay for tuition costs and travel stipends for twenty nine officers from around the state. Officers from Torrance County, Dona Ana County, Las Cruces, Truth or Consequences, Artesia, Santa Fe County, Deming-Luna County, Santa Clara, Bernalillo, Estancia, Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, Hobbs, Gallup-McKinley County, Chaves County, Belen and Valencia County were awarded $500 each for tuition and $250 each for those traveling more than 60 miles to attend.
The topics covered in Level Two included:
Animals as Evidence, Blood Sports – Dog and Cock Fighting, Pet Store Inspections, Facility Standards & Inspections, Large Animal Husbandry, Satanic, Cult & Bestiality Investigations, Body Condition Scoring of Horses, Livestock & Pets, Evaluation of Large Animal Cruelty with Veterinarians, Officer Survival/Defense Tactics , Affidavit and Search Warrant Civil Liability for Humane Investigator and Juvenile Law.
APNM encourages all agencies to remember annual training when compiling their budgets, and urges them to take advantage of the recurring quality training in New Mexico. We will continue to seek funds to help defray tuition costs, and hope to have continued scholarships available in the future.
