This is a limited list of organizations and people who can provide basic information, assistance or referrals. Other resources may be found in APNM’s Directory of Animal Services, APNM’s Quick Guide, NM Resource List ("New Mexico Animal Law: Statues, Regulations and Ordinances") and on the internet. Please note that many national animal advocacy groups have specific experience on certain animal issues and can offer valuable information.

Legal Resources:

Attorneys Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) -- (707) 769-7771
Will provide free legal information on animal related issues and offer referrals to pro-bono legal help in your area.

"New Mexico Animal Law: Statutes, Regulations and Ordinances" -- All of New Mexico’s laws, statutes, ordinances and regulations that relate to animals compiled by Animal Protection of New Mexico (APNM). This comprehensive binder is available at no charge to law enforcement agencies and non-profit organizations that work on animal issues. Others may purchase this book for production cost, $49.95. Yearly supplements and updates will be provided. (APNM will make the statute book available at each FAC training session. Please check with your department head to see if your agency already has a copy.)

Animal Resources:

Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR) -- (530) 759-8106
Will provide information related to animal issues and can offer referrals to experts on specific animal issues. For example, if you have a pending case requiring expert information on husbandry issues related to keeping tigers, AVAR may be able to refer you to a qualified veterinarian experienced in exotic cat care.

Will provide resources and referrals to additional groups or individuals who may be of assistance in animal issues.

Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) -- (202) 452-1100
Familiar with a variety of animal issues, legislation and the link between animal abuse and human violence. Offer a variety of low-cost publications related to humane education and animal issues.

American Humane Association (AHA) -- 800-227-4645
Offer a variety of affordable training classes across the country including: euthanasia techniques; cruelty investigations; livestock and horse cruelty investigations; and shelter operations. In addition to animal abuse, they have a wealth of information on child abuse.SPAY/NEUTER:

In addition to local spay/neuter programs, such as area humane societies and shelters, the following general spay/neuter information may be helpful for people who need financial assistance to alter their companion animals:

"Vet Co.": Provides low cost spay/neuter -- females approximately $27.00 + $12.00 for vaccinations, males approximately $21.00 + $12.00 for vaccinations. (cost estimates for Albuquerque area as of January 2000)

NMHP has been formed by many of New Mexico's animal organizations, individuals and animal control agencies to address the problem of New Mexico's pet overpopulation. The
coalition will focus on spay-neuter programs and believes that by working together the problem can be more seriously addressed.

(The City of Albuquerque Animal Services Division and the No More Homeless Pets Coalition are offering free cat spays and neuters for a limited time through a program called Neuter Scooter. Call the special NEUTER SCOOTER HOTLINE 505-764-1127 for more information. Information about this program will be available from 10/2/00 – 10/20/00. Surgeries will be scheduled between 10/23/00 – 11/10/00.)
