Humane Euthanasia

April 14, 2004
Dear Animal Control or Animal Shelter Director,

As you may know, on March 2, 2004 Governor Richardson signed SB 51, a bill prohibiting intracardiac injection on conscious animals. To assist you in maintaining humane standards, a copy of the new law is enclosed along with pertinent information on pre-euthanasia anesthetics.

If your department uses the intracardiac route of injection you must utilize the appropriate pre-euthanasia anesthetics according to guidelines in order to be in compliance with state law and to avoid possible charges. As such, we encourage you to keep the necessary drugs in stock at all times and train staff to use them properly. Protocols for performing humane euthanasia can be found at www.nmanimalcontrol.com or can be sent to you upon request.

I hope you’ll take time to read the enclosed information and keep it on file for use in your animal control department or animal shelter.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance and know that I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to work with you in addressing issues involving humane animal care and control.
Very Truly Yours,

Michele Rokke
