Humane
Euthanasia - HEPP
December 1, 2002
Dear Animal Control/Shelter Director and Governing
Body,
Thank you for considering your city or county
as a location for implementing Animal Protection of New Mexico's
(APNM's) Humane Euthanasia Pilot Program (HEPP). Your attentiveness
to issues that concern community members are a fine example of proactive
and compassionate leadership.
I'm sure you know that due to the tragedy of pet
overpopulation, millions of animals are euthanized every year in
this country; over 90,000 in New Mexico alone. As a civilized society
we have a responsibility to employ humane euthanasia techniques
exclusively, ensuring a painless and rapid death for every unwanted
animal we must destroy. Experts agree that a properly delivered
lethal injection of sodium pentobarbital is the most humane method
available for routine euthanasia of shelter animals. As you read
the enclosed information you'll see that a lethal injection of sodium
pentobarbital is cost effective, easier on staff, less stressful
for the animals and a compassionate choice overall.
We have compiled and created information essential
to phasing out carbon monoxide or the current euthanasia method
and implementing humane euthanasia in your shelter. As you read
the enclosed information you'll see how easy the transition is and
how important it is for residents, personnel and the animals. Participating
in the Data Collection aspect of HEPP will help other communities
make the transition to humane euthanasia as well as document your
agency's success.
Please know that we applaud your pro-active stance
on these issues and encourage you to contact APNM for assistance
with this project or any other animal issue that arises. I look
forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience regarding
this proposal.
Very Truly Yours,
Michele Rokke
